Illustration and Tattoos

Kyler where are you from and where are you based?

I’ve lived all over the US. I was born in Colorado and have been in Seattle the last 8 years.

What about your artistic background?

I originally did sculpture and ceramics but began doing illustration and then tattooing when I moved to Seattle.

When  you realized Illustration will be your future, your job?

I’m still not sure it will be what I do as my job forever, but I’m very happy I can pay bills with it now.

I was quit my job in an office 4 years ago and have been doing illustration (then tattooing) full time since.

Everyone knew Pearl liked to schuck.

What about your artistic references and what are your sources of inspiration in everyday life?
I love old tattoo designs, children’s books, advertisements and photos from the early 1900’s.
What are the steps to realize an illustration?
My illustrations are not very realistic, so I can usually draw them pretty quickly. I like being able to get out my idea quickly.
Usually just a pencil sketch or two, then I can ink it out.

Happy birthday Jazmin, thanks for coming out to get tattooed!

When you started with tattoos and what fascinates you in this kind of art?

I like the timeless designs, and how it exists outside of the constraints of most kinds of art or other jobs.

Although it is changing a lot, it still seems a little like the wild west, none of the mundane bullshit that came with all the regular jobs I had before.

Your first tattoo: feelings, sensations…
I remember being surprised that it didn’t hurt very much, though they hurt much more now that I’m a little older :)
As soon as I got it I just wanted another.

Are you a biker?
Just have a bicycle !

Are you inspired by the Moto culture? What’s your relation with the Two Wheels world?
Sure, I love having old cars and someday will probably get an old motorcycle too. All my friends have them, I just kind of missed the boat on getting into them. I’m usually hauling around big pieces of art, so my old truck works better than a motorcycle for that kind of thing.
I do lots of art for motorcycle shows and companies, probably because motorcycle culture and tattoo culture have a lot of overlap.

What are you working on and what about your future projects?
Currently I’m working on some larger murals, I hope to finish up with all my design projects within the next month so I can start working on a new show for the spring. I hope to do some bigger 3-d work soon.
